Cellular Nutrition
As an equine therapist, one of the things I get asked a lot about is nutrition. Is my horse getting everything he needs in his diet? What can I do to support my horse – when he is unwell? How can I make sure my horse is getting the correct balance of minerals in his diet?
I thought I’d spend today talking about tissue salts and their role in equine health. Minerals are an important aspect of a good healthy body. Good quality blood and well balanced cellular health will naturally lead to a body that is vibrant and alive. As is always the case, the macrocosm is a reflection of the microcosm. Or in other words, the greater whole can only be as healthy as the smaller components within it. What I’m really talking about here is good cellular health. When the cells of our body are supported with ample nutrition, adequate mineral balance and clean cellular hydration, the body is able to function smoothly and effortlessly. When our cells are starved of nutrition, dehydrated or deficient in essential nutrients, their ability to function is impaired and the body suffers.
The body contains twelve vital inorganic elements that are responsible for maintenance of normal cell function. When one or more of these elements become deficient the normal cell function or metabolism is disturbed and a condition arises known as disease. By supplying the lacking elements in the form of Biochemical Remedies (Tissue Salts), normal cell function and health can be restored. After examining the affect providing tissue salts had on people, it was later discovered that these same salts were beneficial to animals also and can be used easily and efficiently with horses.
Tissue salts have been used now for over one hundred years and it is their ease of use and their affordability that makes them great to use with horses.
Tissue Salts are inorganic mineral substances, exactly the same as those that compose our earth and its soils. Dr Schuessler, a 19th Century German physician, recognised them as the material basis of the organs of the body and identified 12 Tissue Salts in every body cell. Wilhelm Henrich Schussler. Schussler (1821-1898) was born in Zwischenaln, Germany and pursued a career in orthodox medicine. However, he became dispirited with the methods of the day and re-trained in homeopathy. After practicing for some years he developed a method of using remedies called ‘Tissue Salts’. These mineral Tissue Salts are a homeopathically prepared micro-dose of the body’s 12 vital minerals. In this form the minerals are very easy to assimilate and pass rapidly into the blood stream and into the cells, restoring balance.
Tissue Salts are easy to store and last at least 3 years when properly prepared by a Homeopathic Chemist. They are also cheaper than most other Natural Therapies. They can be given to your horse without fear of any side effects and there is no problem with over-dosage.
One of the questions I often get asked is how Tissue Salts differ from other minerals. The answer to this really lies in the body’s ability to digest and absorb the essential minerals from the provided food sources available.
Other minerals are a crude form of mineral that needs to be broken down in the digestive tract before being absorbed. Tissue Salts however are very easy to assimilate and they pass rapidly into the blood stream and into the cells.
Minerals are important because without the presence of minerals necessary for assimilation, Vitamins are often useless and unusable to the body.
How can Tissue Salts help my Horse:
- Tissue Salts provide cells with essential nutrients
- A proper mineral balance is necessary for normal cell function
- When the blood is lacking necessary nutrients, the body becomes prone to illness
- Tissue Salts improve the overall absorption of nutrients coming into your horse’s body, encouraging overall good health and well being

Safety Tips
Tissue salts are extremely safe to use on your horse:
- Tissue Salts are non-toxic and non-addictive
- They are completely safe producing no side effects
- They can be safely used alongside prescriptive medicine
- They can be safely used by people and horses of all ages
- Are suitable throughout all the stages of pregnancy
Tissue Salts will help to increase your horse’s health and longevity, providing your horse’s cells with essential nutrients and the proper mineral balance necessary for normal cell function. They are useful to include in your daily care program when your horse has a particular ailment, or if recovering from illness. They are particularly helpful when you know your horse is not absorbing the goodness of his food or if there is a mineral imbalance in the feed.
Tissue Salts are said to improve the overall absorption of nutrients coming into your horse’s body, encouraging overall good health and well-being.

I live near a naturopathic school in Portland, Ore. and they have a compound pharmacy and I want to get tissue cell salts for my horse. How would I ask for this to be compounded. They said they need to know which tissue cell salt before they will prescribe it for my horse who has ringworm. Thank you.
Hi Karol
Thankyou for your question. I would recommend to give your horse 2 Tablets of Kali Sulph twice daily to support your horse’s immune system and resist further spreading of the condition.
Simply ask your pharmacist to prepare for you the tissue salt Kali Sulph or alternatively you may find an already prepared version at your local shops.
There are several other suggestions I would recommend to support your horse’s healing from ringworm. See my article on Remedies for Ringworm on this website for further help.
Wishing your horse a speedy recovery!
